Wordy-Gurdy on the radio, January 2017

The year really kicked in when we returned to the airwaves with Helen Jennings for her first show back in the studio.
And we were talkin' bout the blues – the likes of Rhiannon Giddens, Geeshie Wiley, Big Mama Thornton, Barbara Dane, Bonnie Raitt – with some fiery writing from the 18th Oxford American Southern Music Issue.

‘You don’t know me’, Barbara Dane
‘I feel the same’, Bonnie Raitt
‘Pick poor Robin clean’, Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas
‘Black rat’, Big Mama Thornton with Muddy Waters Blues Band
All from Oxford American Southern Music Issue #18, ‘Visions of the Blues’
‘Julie’, Rhiannon Giddens, Live at 2016 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

'Ball and Chain', Big Mama Thornton with Buddy Guy's Blues Band, 1970

Text excerpts
18th Oxford American Southern Music Issue; excerpts from the following:
'Notes on the songs', Maxwell George, Eliza Borné and OA staff
